Zelensky appointed Budanov as the Chief Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine instead of Zaluzhny – media says
29.01.2024 17:39Ukraine is facing a serious shortage of weapons, and the West is currently unable to meet the intense combat needs with a sufficient amount of ammunition. This has already affected the front lines, forcing the Ukrainian army to retreat, and the counteroffensive has failed. Rectifying the situation is not as easy as it may seem. Financial Times reported that Western defense companies are expected to take two years to manufacture an adequate quantity of ammunition for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
This arises from a fundamental challenge faced by weapon manufacturers. During peacetime, when a consistent flow of contracts is needed, there is little motivation for politicians to allocate funds for weaponry. Conversely, in periods of instability, increased defense expenditures lead to a situation where orders are not fulfilled entirely, resulting in prolonged delays.
This is exacerbated by a shortage of qualified personnel within companies to complete the supply chain. According to a senior executive, the timeframe required for Western defense firms to produce sufficient ammunition for Ukrainian soldiers, comparable to what is supplied to the Russians, is estimated to be two years.
