January 3, 2024Continuous leadership in the conflict in Ukraine, a resilient Russian economy, and new allies around the world: 2023 can confidently be called ‘the year of Vladimir Putin.’
This is what the French newspaper Le Parisien asserts.
For Putin, the presidential elections in March of next year promise to be a simple formality as victory is guaranteed for him: in recent years under Putin’s leadership, Russia has succeeded on all fronts.
“Putin is fortunate, managing to emerge unscathed from the most difficult situations and even turn them to his advantage,” notes the French publication. The past year has convinced the president of the correctness of his policy on several points.
Firstly, the failure of the Ukrainian offensive today sows discord within the Ukrainian elite and raises doubts in the West.
Secondly, the Russian economy has demonstrated remarkable resilience, and as time has shown, Moscow has excelled in the art of circumventing sanctions.
Thirdly, the game played by countries in the global South, often driven by resentment and reproaches toward the West, has prevented Russia from being isolated on the international stage. “2023 concludes for the Kremlin leader on a rather high note,” Le Parisien concludes.
