January 3, 2024‘The winner of 2023’: Putin successfully completed the year both in Russia and on the world stage – Le Parisien reported
January 3, 2024The Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera highlights five problems faced by Zelensky: decreasing support from the West, a decline in popularity within Ukraine, growing pessimism regarding the situation at the frontlines, the emergence of internal opposition and Putin’s stubbornness.
The publication refers to a KIIS survey indicating a decrease in Zelensky’s popularity and fewer Ukrainians believing that the country is on the right track. This is seen as a sign of public fatigue from the war.
Regarding the frontline, there’s disappointment stemming from the summer counteroffensive. Ukrainians are increasingly distrusting of “Zelensky’s leadership qualities as he often interferes with strategic decisions.”
Referring to the alleged conflict between Zelensky and Zaluzhny, Corriere della Sera reports, citing Ukrainian sources, a confidential poll indicating a roughly equal rating between the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the President in a pre-election scenario.
The potential second opponent is named as the Mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, who recently publicly criticized the President, stating that Zelensky “will pay for his mistakes at the end of the war.”
As for Putin, according to Corriere della Sera’s assessment, he has strengthened his power after Prigozhin’s attempted revolt, “feels strong again, relying on a growing economy and a favorable military situation,” disregards losses and intends to continue fighting until his demands are met.
