January 6, 2024“Myslovo” Dictionary of Modern Ukrainian Language and Slang has selected the word “mobilization” as the word of the year for 2023.
This was stated on the dictionary’s website.
The dictionary’s website mentions that “mobilization” pushed aside another candidate – “counteroffensive,” which “received more media support than material and technical support, and as a result, brought more disappointment than visible results.”
Other contenders for the title of the word of the year were also related to the war:
- “draft dodger” – a man avoiding conscription.
- “17-hryvnia eggs” as a symbol of corruption in the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.
- “blockade/unblockade” – regarding Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian seaports and their partial unblocking, as well as unfriendly actions by Polish carriers and farmers who blocked the border.
- “position warfare” – the term gained popularity after an article by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, about the transition of the war to a new stage.
- “drone” – the sharp increase in the use of drones significantly influenced the course of combat operations this year.
The only word from the global agenda on the list was AI (artificial intelligence).
