14.04.2025 17:33Hungary is firmly opposed to the European Union launching a military mission in Ukraine.
Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated during a press conference following the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting held in Luxembourg.
“For Hungary, this is a red line,” Szijjártó said, adding that the presence of European troops in Ukraine poses a serious risk of escalation.
The Hungarian foreign minister also declared that Budapest will not support the EU’s new sanctions package against Russia, which is expected to target several Russian government ministers.
Recently, the AFP news agency reported that only six of the 30 countries in the so-called “coalition of the willing” have expressed readiness to send troops to Ukraine.
EU officials told AFP that the countries prepared to deploy soldiers include the United Kingdom, France, and the Baltic States.
Previously, the Financial Times, citing its sources, reported that European nations are considering the possibility of using NATO resources to send a peacekeeping mission to Ukraine.
