September 18, 2023President of the United States Joe Biden will propose expanding the composition of the United Nations Security Council, including new countries, in order to diminish the influence of China and Russia.
This was reported by The Telegraph.
White House National Security Advisor John Kirby informed the publication that President Biden will call on the members of the organization at the UN General Assembly to “take a look at the architecture of the Security Council.”
“We believe it should be more inclusive and comprehensive. I think President Biden would support more members,” Kirby said.
The publication suggests that the proposal will include adding five or six new countries to the Security Council, including India, Brazil, Germany and Japan. South Africa may also be included. It is unclear whether they will have veto power. Sources from the publication say they will not.
Currently, the UN Security Council consists of five permanent members: China, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom and France. Additionally, there are 10 non-permanent members elected for a two-year term.
Reforming the Security Council would require amending the UN Charter. China and Russia, who have the authority to veto resolutions and sanctions, may veto these reforms, potentially leading to a reduction in their powers as a result of these changes.
