The Russian Foreign Ministry pointed to the unwillingness of Ukrainian citizens to fight back for territories
25.09.2025 15:03U.S. President Donald Trump and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán held a phone call following Washington’s promise to ask Hungary to stop purchasing Russian oil.
This was reported by Bloomberg.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said the two leaders discussed energy, the war in Ukraine, the global economy, and tariffs. He did not provide further details of the conversation.
Earlier, Szijjártó stated that Hungary would not stop buying Russian oil and gas.
Orbán’s chief of staff noted that, according to IMF estimates, abandoning Russian gas under the European Commission’s plan (by 2027) would cost Hungary 4% of GDP, or $10 billion. (Trump, meanwhile, is urging Hungary to give it up even sooner.) This, he said, would undermine the country’s energy security. The Adriatic oil pipeline through the Balkans—seen by European authorities as an alternative to Russian supplies—cannot handle the additional load.
Previously, media reported that the European Union would take measures to reduce Hungary’s and Slovakia’s purchases of Russian oil.
U.S. Energy Secretary Christopher Wright had also stated that by the end of 2026, Washington aims to replace Russian gas supplies to Europe with American energy resources.
