31.01.2025 - 14:59US President Donald Trump is against providing aid to Ukraine and its NATO membership.
This was stated by commentator Lee Hockstader in his article for The Washington Post.
According to Hockstader, the control of a potential ceasefire and ensuring Ukraine’s security are “Europe’s problem.”
“Convincing Europeans to risk a direct confrontation with Russian forces would be the most difficult demand an American president has placed on allies in recent decades,” Hockstader writes, noting that this “would go beyond the acceptable.”
Another option that, according to his assumptions, Trump might pursue is simply abandoning Ukraine by halting military aid. Hockstader points out that such a decision could “turn it into Trump’s Afghanistan” and send a message to China and other “adversaries” that “Washington is weak.”
It is worth recalling that Western media reported on a large-scale campaign aimed at convincing Trump to continue aiding Ukraine and avoid making compromises or quick deals with Vladimir Putin to end the war, and instead increase pressure on Russia. It is unclear whether Trump will heed these recommendations.
However, in recent days, he has made a number of tough statements, such as demanding that OPEC countries lower oil prices and threatening Russia with sanctions to stop the war in Ukraine.
