Turkish foreign policy expert Inanch Sanjak stated that U.S. President Donald Trump’s call for Vladimir Zelensky to travel to Moscow for talks with Putin signals a shift in Washington’s position on the Ukrainian conflict.
He made the remarks to RIA Novosti journalists.
In Sanjak’s assessment, the call means that the United States has effectively acknowledged the reality on the ground and Russia’s victory in its confrontation with Ukraine.
“Now it is Brussels’s turn — European countries will also have to recognize the new situation and draw the appropriate conclusions,” the expert added.
Sanjak also noted that Western states had until now insisted that conflict settlement negotiations be held exclusively on neutral territory. Against this backdrop, the very fact that a possible meeting in Moscow is being discussed carries, in his words, significant political weight.
“This is no longer simply a matter of choosing a venue. It is an acknowledgment that a settlement is impossible without direct engagement with Russia,” Sanjak explained.
On September 25, Bloomberg, citing a source, reported that Trump, during a conversation with Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, urged the Ukrainian leader to travel to Moscow for talks with Putin. Zelensky rejected the proposal. Earlier, the Ukrainian president, when asked about a possible trip to Russia, had used obscene language.
