December 4, 2024U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged Ukraine to make “difficult but necessary” decisions regarding mobilization.
He made this statement during a press conference in Brussels.
“Mobilization. This is very important because even with money and ammunition, there must be people on the front lines to resist Russian aggression. Ukraine must make tough decisions about further mobilization, but these are necessary decisions,” said Blinken.
He added, “We have commitments: every person, every soldier that Ukraine mobilizes must undergo training and receive the equipment necessary for the effective defense of the country.”
It should be noted that the outgoing administration of Joe Biden is urging Ukraine to lower the mobilization age to 18. The U.S. is pushing for this to rapidly increase the size of the armed forces. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected this demand, instead calling for increased weapons supplies from the West.
In addition to lowering the age, the U.S. also wants stricter measures regarding deserters. A Biden administration official said that Ukraine could optimize its current forces by taking a more aggressive approach toward soldiers who desert or go AWOL.
Elon Musk, who is close to Donald Trump, criticized the demand regarding the age.
