Zelensky learned of the energy ceasefire with Russia from Trump’s statement — not directly from the American side
12.10.2026 07:32Washington warned Kyiv of a possible block on intelligence sharing and weapons supplies if Ukraine continues to strike Russian oil refineries.
This was reported by the British newspaper The Financial Times, citing sources.
According to the publication’s sources, American officials contacted representatives of Ukraine and European countries over the weekend of October 10–11. During the talks, Washington warned that it could halt intelligence sharing and block the PURL mechanism — a program for purchasing American weapons for the Ukrainian Armed Forces using funds from European states.
“They’re calling Kyiv… They’re calling everyone in Europe,” said one official who received a call from a representative of the U.S. Department of Defense.
Among those who reported contact with American officials was Pavlo Palisa, deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.
The U.S. president also publicly commented on the situation, explaining Washington’s position on strikes against oil infrastructure.
“We told him: ‘Do whatever you want with Russia, just don’t hit the oil refineries, because that creates a world problem,'” the U.S. president said.
Trump also publicly called for Zelensky’s resignation, claiming that the Ukrainian leader “could have settled the conflict many times already” with Russia. Zelensky, for his part, believes that Trump is pressuring him because he cannot stop Putin.
