Ukraine and the U.S. failed to resolve the main issues of the peace plan at the talks in Miami – media

The issue of security guarantees for Ukraine from the West remains unresolved after the U.S.–Ukraine talks in Florida.

This was reported by the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal, citing a senior U.S. official.

“A number of key issues remain unresolved, including the nature of security guarantees for Ukraine from the U.S. and the West,” WSJ writes.

At the same time, the paper confirms that U.S. President’s special envoy Stephen Witkoff and the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner are flying to Moscow today for talks with Kremlin head Vladimir Putin.

Sources of the outlet RBC-Ukraine also said that none of the key issues at the meeting between the U.S. and Ukrainian delegations in Miami were resolved.

In particular, the Ukrainian delegation refused to withdraw troops from Donetsk region, arguing this with constitutional constraints, public opinion in Ukraine, and the “mismatch with the real situation on the ground.”

According to RBC-Ukraine’s sources, Kyiv’s position remains the same: a ceasefire must be based on the current front line. Only after that should discussions about territories begin.

Kyiv also rejected another point of Trump’s peace plan during the talks — the renunciation of NATO membership. Representatives of the Ukrainian delegation referred to the fact that “the course toward joining the Alliance is enshrined in the Constitution, and changing it for the sake of a peace deal would be a bad precedent.”

It should be noted that both Rubio and Umerov, following yesterday’s meeting, also stated that no final agreements had been reached.

But the one thing that doesn’t fit the picture of a complete refusal by Kyiv to implement the two main points of Trump’s peace plan — NATO and territories (as follows from the above-mentioned reports by Ukrainian media sources) — is the fact that today Witkoff and Kushner are heading to Moscow for talks with Putin.

If the Americans failed to reach agreement with the Ukrainian delegation on the key contentious issues (which, according to Western media, was the main goal of the Miami meeting), it is not entirely clear with what (and for what purpose) Witkoff and Kushner are now flying to Russia.
