January 11, 2024Ukraine has become one of the focal points in the recent debates among Republican presidential candidates, Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley.
Haley emphasized the need to support Ukraine, while DeSantis argued that her approach does not differ from Biden’s, and supporting the war in Ukraine would cost America hundreds of billions more dollars with unclear prospects.
“They want another $180 billion; they won’t tell you when they achieve their goals. And this will continue, possibly hundreds of billions more in the future,” DeSantis stated.
Haley countered, asserting that there is enough money for both the Mexican border and Ukraine. She claimed that supporting Ukraine safeguards the U.S. from direct involvement in the war.
“They say we have to choose between Ukraine and Israel, Israel and border security. Supporting Ukraine is 3.5% of our defense budget. I don’t want to send money, it’s equipment and weapons. If we support Ukraine and Israel together, it’s only 5%. With border security – 20%. There’s no need to choose when it comes to national security; it’s about ensuring the safety of the United States. It’s about preventing war and protecting our military from war,” responded Haley.
DeSantis argued that this is “UN thinking.”
“That we are somehow globalists and have unlimited resources. I think that’s the problem: you can take the ambassador out of the UN (referring to Haley’s past role as U.S. Ambassador to the UN), but you can’t take the UN out of the ambassador,” DeSantis stated.
Haley criticized DeSantis, pointing out that he initially supported allocating funds to Ukraine and then changed his position: “No one knows what he believes.”
It’s worth noting that the leading Republican candidate, Trump, is not participating in intra-party debates but is instead holding his own events.
