Russia continues to exert pressure on the eastern front, despite the Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region
August 14, 2024While the West watches helplessly as events unfold in Ukraine, Russia is growing bolder: “Why be afraid? Despite the West having the resources to end this conflict on Ukraine’s terms, it clearly lacks the will to win. For Vladimir Putin, victory is now entirely achievable.”
This opinion appeared on the pages of The New York Times.
For the past two and a half years, Western leaders have repeated that they will support Ukraine “for as long as it takes.” However, the promised aid arrives late and in insufficient quantities, and the restrictions on the use of this aid significantly reduce its effectiveness.
“This situation—an enemy that has the desire and resources to fight to the end, and allies who provide just enough help to prevent the front from collapsing tomorrow—puts Ukraine in a hopeless position,” the publication argues.
Sooner or later, Kyiv will have to surrender and yield to Moscow. Defeat will be swift and less painful if Donald Trump wins the U.S. elections and ends the conflict “within 24 hours,” as he has promised. If the Democrats retain the White House and continue their half-hearted strategy, Ukraine will still lose—only it will be a much longer and more painful process for the country, according to the NYT. Therefore, no matter how much Kyiv and its allies deny it, Putin’s latest peace proposal is “the most realistic scenario.”
