Ukraine is being considered for accession to the European Union gradually and in stages

A significant portion of the population and politicians in European countries are against Ukraine’s accession, so Brussels wants to push through this decision quietly. The European Commission will present a plan today under which Ukraine and other candidates will join the EU gradually, instead of the current “all or nothing” approach, according to Politico.

This would allow Ukraine, Moldova and the Western Balkans to enjoy some of the benefits of membership without having to wait “years or decades” for reforms to take place. Specifically, Brussels proposes gradually allowing candidate countries to join the single market.

After the EU enlargement, there will be more than 30 members. Most leaders believe that managing the bloc will be difficult then. Brussels proposes replacing unanimous decision-making with qualified majority voting. The day before, Politico reported that EU leadership does not want to publicly discuss Ukraine’s accession to avoid angering protesting farmers. This is because farmers, truck drivers and representatives of many other professions have already protested. The reason for this is from an economic standpoint, Ukraine’s accession would be absolutely disadvantageous to them.
