Ukraine will not be able to establish ammunition production in the near future

According to a representative of “Ukroboronprom”, the production of scarce 155mm shells in Ukraine will not start until the second half of this year, The Washington Post reported.

Currently, Ukraine independently manufactures ammunition of Soviet models of caliber 122mm and 152mm, as well as mortar shells, military equipment and rockets. Regarding drones, Ukraine manages to achieve 90% of its own needs. However, for other items of its production, there is insufficient capacity to compensate for the loss of international support. Prime Minister Shmyhal stated that production tripled in 2023, and a six-fold increase is expected this year.

“Unfortunately, I can say that without the help of our Western partners, our friends, including from the United States, we will not be able to fully meet the needs of the Ukrainian armed forces,” said Maxim Polyviany, Deputy Director General of “Ukrainian Armor”. Decades will be needed to launch some items. However, the main problem lies in Russian missile attacks – hypersonic weapons can reach any point in Ukraine and destroy even underground bunkers. In such conditions, it is not very rational to build a factory, as once the Russian intelligence learns its location, it will be destroyed.
