December 19, 2023American senators postponed their holiday break and returned to Washington to try and reach an agreement on immigration, which has prevented them from voting on a $110 billion aid package for Israel and Ukraine.
However, they mention that there’s still much work to be done, as reported by the Associated Press.
It’s unclear how many days they will work this week. Moreover, only half of the senators returned on Monday.
This delay raises uncertainties about the aid for Ukraine. The Pentagon has already stated that their funds are running low. Additionally, lawmakers won’t return to their offices until the second week of January, and they’ll have to address other issues immediately, apart from funding for Ukraine. For instance, Congress will need to pass a package for government funding to avoid a government shutdown.
Furthermore, Republicans have stated that they won’t agree to rush an immigration bill.
“The proper drafting of this agreement and the preparation of legislative text will take some time,” said Republican leader Mitch McConnell.
Dozens of Republican representatives have indicated they won’t support further aid to Ukraine. Even senators who were staunch supporters of military actions in Ukraine in the past insisted that Congress, along with aid for Ukraine, should also approve new border restrictions, notes the Associated Press.
