December 19, 2023Ukraine is facing increasing difficulty in enlisting new soldiers, leading military officials to resort to raids in gyms and shopping centers.
The declining number of new recruits in the Armed Forces of Ukraine is attributed to several factors. Firstly, recruits often end up in units unrelated to their expertise after basic training in Western Europe, typically being deployed to high-intensity zones on the frontline. Secondly, some no longer perceive the conflict as an immediate threat to Ukraine’s sovereignty. Recognizing this challenge, the Ministry of Defense initiated a new mobilization strategy in September. The reforms aim to offer recruits more options in choosing specific roles and establish a clearer rotation and rest system. Ultimately, volunteers will be mobilized for specific periods, departing from the current indefinite terms.
Nevertheless, Ukrainian military figures and experts stress the insufficiency of these changes, advocating for a comprehensive nationwide mobilization involving various sectors such as industry, government and resources. The Sydney Morning Herald suggests that Kiev is confronted with challenging decisions in this regard.
