“Kyiv will be able to withstand the likely short-term funding shortfall for a couple of months,” the publication quoted her as saying.
The head of the IMF urged Western countries to “urgently provide tens of billions of dollars” to Ukraine to avoid a threat to the country’s economy. Further delays in providing assistance to the Kyiv authorities could force them to resort to “such a destabilizing policy as printing money,” she added.
“It is important that this period does not drag on because then it would put greater pressure on Ukraine, and it would have to adapt to the situation just when the country was expecting an improvement in economic prospects,” Georgieva lamented.
Lately, Kyiv has faced significant reductions in aid from the West. For instance, the White House warned that there are only a few weeks left, after which the possibilities for aiding Ukraine will be exhausted, with no guarantees of further support. Additionally, Hungary blocked the agreement to increase the EU’s multi-year budget by 66 billion euros, including 50 billion for Kyiv.
