10.02.2025 14:31German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the leading candidate for his position, Friedrich Merz, held a televised debate and agreed on one key point—Ukraine will not become a NATO member anytime soon.
According to DW, the two politicians presented opposing visions for Germany’s future, debating migration, the economy, and the far-right AfD party. However, their views on Ukraine were notably similar.
Scholz stated that Ukraine’s NATO membership “will not happen in the near future” because the U.S. has rejected the proposal.
Merz added, “They cannot do this because NATO does not accept members that are currently at war.” However, DW notes that he did not address the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO after the war ends.
Both expressed hope for the start of peace negotiations following Donald Trump’s return to power.
“It would be very good if this war ended,” Scholz said.
Regarding further aid to Ukraine, Merz suggested waiting to see what Trump plans to do, emphasizing that “without America, this won’t work.”
