December 14, 2023The US Senate has supported a bill on defense policy, allocating a record $886 billion in annual military spending. This includes a small amount of aid for Ukraine, as reported by Reuters.
The document received support from both Republicans and Democrats. It extends one aid measure for Ukraine, the Security Assistance Initiative, until the end of 2026, authorizing $300 million for the program in the current fiscal year (until September 30, 2024) and the following year.
“However, this figure is minuscule compared to the $61 billion in aid to Ukraine that Biden asked Congress to approve,” Reuters notes. There have been active debates in Congress in the last month regarding assistance to Kyiv. Republicans consider spending on Ukraine unjustified and are reluctant to further aid Ukraine due to concerns about corruption and the setbacks of the Ukrainian army.
