March 26, 2024A bill to control the popular messenger Telegram has been registered in the Verkhovna Rada. The bill was introduced by a group of deputies led by Nikolay Knyazhitsky from “European Solidarity” and, in particular, the heads of the committees on freedom of speech Yaroslav Yurchishin from “Voice” and humanitarian policy Nikita Poturaev from “Servant of the People”.
The platform will be obliged to delete content from Telegram channels at the request of the National Council for Television and Radio Broadcasting – that is, without any court decision. It also includes the possibility of demanding the blocking of individual users and Telegram channels in Ukraine.
The main complaint against the platform is not as a messenger but as a social network, as there are a large number of news and information channels. According to social surveys, Telegram has become the main source of information for Ukrainians, as there is no longer trust in state propaganda.
