October 1, 2024The new Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiha, discussed the possibility of ending the war along the current front lines with Western colleagues in the United States.
This was reported by “The Financial Times”, citing sources.
It is noted that Sybiha has a “more pragmatic position regarding the possibility of negotiations based on the principle of ‘land for security'” (i.e., foregoing the return of captured territories by military means in exchange for NATO membership or similar security guarantees from Western countries) compared to his predecessor, Dmytro Kuleba, under whom even discussing such topics was forbidden.
“We are increasingly openly discussing how this will end and what Ukraine will have to give up to achieve a permanent peace agreement. And this is a significant change from six months ago when such conversations were taboo,” said one of the diplomats who attended the meeting in New York.
It’s worth recalling that Jens Stoltenberg, as he was stepping down from his position as NATO Secretary General, suggested that Ukraine might be admitted to the Alliance with only the territories under its control.
