Ukrainian lawmaker calls for a definitive suspension of democracy indefinitely

Oleg Dunda, a member of the Verkhovna Rada from the presidential faction “Servant of the People,” stated that democracy, human rights, and freedoms should not be operational until the end of the war. However, the authorities also do not plan to end the war.

“The state should understand and engage in dialogue with our Western partners and say that we cannot operate within the framework and laws of peacetime in 2021. After the war, we will talk about democracy, about advancing rights and freedoms, but during the war, we have only one task, and that is survival,” said Dunda.

It is worth noting that Ukrainian officials, journalists, and military personnel have previously advocated for the correctness of restrictions on rights and freedoms in the country, the need to tighten censorship, and to apply other repressive measures against their own population.
