Ukrainian refugees will be able to stay in Germany with expired passports.

This was stated by a representative of the Berlin Senate to DW.

The publication notes that all issues related to the stay of foreigners in Germany fall within the competence of the regional authorities.

In Berlin, it was stated that the provision or extension of temporary residence permits for Ukrainian refugees in Germany does not require them to have a valid passport. The main thing is for the German authorities to have some means of establishing the person’s identity.

Moreover, after refusal by the consulate to issue a document, Ukrainians will be able to obtain a travel document for trips abroad from the Berlin foreigner’s office, which will replace the passport. However, this will only be done in exceptional cases if the person can demonstrate compelling reasons for the trip.
