November 1, 2023Border service employees in the Lubusz Voivodeship in southwest Poland have detained a Ukrainian citizen who was involved in the illegal transportation of migrants and threatened border guards with a knife.
This information was reported by the Polish authorities.
Polish border guards claim that they attempted to stop a minibus with Polish license plates heading towards the German border. The driver ignored signals to stop and began to flee at high speed. Near the village of Walowice in the border area, the man suddenly stopped the vehicle, jumped out, and attempted to escape.
“The border guards fired warning shots. However, it turned out that the driver had no intention of surrendering. He pulled out a knife and began to threaten first one border guard and then stated that he would harm himself,” wrote the Polish Border Service.
Border guards called a police negotiator who convinced the man to put down the knife and surrender. The man turned out to be a 26-year-old Ukrainian citizen who intended to transport a group of foreigners to Germany in the cargo compartment of the bus.
Polish border service officers found a small packet of cocaine (0.5 grams) in the driver’s door, which was also confirmed in the Ukrainian’s system.
The man has been charged with organizing the illegal crossing of the Polish-German border in violation of the rules, disobeying orders to stop the vehicle, physically assaulting an officer, and driving under the influence of narcotics.
Currently, the Ukrainian has been placed in custody for three months, and based on the aggregate of charges, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
