December 22, 2023One Ukrainian individual, Nikolai, shared an incident with “Strana,” detailing an experience involving his wife and friends while in the German city of Metzingen, Strana reported.
He mentioned their regular residence in Ukraine, their limited travel outside the country since the war began and their decision not to seek temporary protection abroad. Their visit to Germany aimed to engage in holiday shopping after visiting outlets, grocery stores and finally, a ski equipment shop.
Following their purchases and while waiting for friends, a situation arose when their method of payment became a concern to the store staff. This led to the sudden involvement of numerous police officers, their subsequent detainment and transportation to a police station for further inquiries. At the station, they underwent thorough checks, including fingerprinting and photographing and were confined overnight in a basement space with minimal comforts. Requests for a translator, legal assistance or contact with the Ukrainian embassy were largely disregarded by the authorities.
After a long wait the next day, they were informed that the currency used for payment was verified and it was confirmed that no counterfeit money was involved. They left Germany immediately, relieved that the ordeal was over, though they still bore the marks from the handcuffs.
