Europe searches for a negotiator with Putin, fearing a U.S. deal struck behind its back
22.10.2026 10:02US President’s special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner “rebuked” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during talks in Oslo over his sharp comments directed at Donald Trump.
This was reported by The New York Times.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the American representatives told Zelensky that “his behavior had enraged the US president.”
During the talks, Zelensky at times pushed back against the US representatives when they expressed displeasure over his statements.
“I never said that,” Zelensky insisted at one point in the conversation.
Nevertheless, according to the NYT, the Ukrainian president “got the message” from the American side.
The outlet also notes the broader context of the situation:
“Zelensky has been one of the few who has at times openly challenged Trump. But he has to carefully calculate how far he can go, as his country still depends on the United States for its very survival as it defends itself against the Russian invasion.”
Earlier, Zelensky stated that Russia supports holding a trilateral meeting at the team level.
