02.07.2026 06:29Official spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova has accused European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen of lying, in connection with her statement about Russia using energy resources as a weapon.
Zakharova made the remarks to the newspaper Izvestia.
The trigger for the sharp assessment was von der Leyen’s claim that Russia had allegedly cut off gas supplies to Europe. Zakharova categorically rejected this assertion.
“Ursula is an accomplished liar. Russia has never once in its life cut off gas to Europe,” Zakharova said.
The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson also stressed that the head of the European Commission is misleading the public on issues that affect the lives of all EU member states. According to Zakharova, any citizen of an EU country has the right to take von der Leyen to court for spreading false information and, in her assessment, would win such a case.
On July 1, Zakharova also stated that the European Union had found itself in a zugzwang situation. Previously, she had mocked the situation with air conditioners in the European Union.
