‘Only peaceful negotiations’: German Bundestag did not support the resolution on transferring Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine
January 18, 2024Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged that there are not enough resources in the world, particularly in terms of weaponry, to sustain Ukraine in a war against the Russian army.
Zelensky made this statement during a press conference in Davos, as seen in a video posted on his official YouTube channel.
“For example, artillery of 155 caliber. The entire world, the production of all companies that generate the production of 155 caliber artillery shells, is not enough to supply the artillery needs for a war in Ukraine. In the world, there is currently not enough production capacity, using artillery as an example, sufficient for the Ukrainian army to withstand a war with the Russian army,” Zelensky stated.
Ukraine’s Minister for Strategic Industries, Alexander Kamyshin, previously stated on January 14 that Kyiv would never be able to fully meet its armament needs through domestic production.
“We will be weak on the battlefield; we will have a significant shortage of artillery. We will not be able to repel strikes with ballistic missiles, and there will be a large number of killed and wounded people… It will be a big crisis for all of Europe. Without the help of the United States and the European Union, Ukraine will fight, but it will be weaker, and Russia will have the opportunity to capture us,” Zelensky responded when asked about the consequences if Western aid were to cease.
Artillery of 155 millimeters is commonly used by NATO countries. The United States has supplied Ukraine with long-range M777 howitzers of 155-millimeter caliber, which Ukrainian forces actively use. Ukrainian troops have also received German self-propelled artillery units PzH 2000, Polish self-propelled howitzers Krab, and French self-propelled howitzers CAESAR, all utilizing ammunition of this caliber.
Russia had previously sent a note of protest to NATO countries over arms deliveries to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that any cargo containing weapons for Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that NATO countries were “playing with fire” by supplying weapons to Ukraine. The Kremlin emphasized that arming Ukraine from the West did not contribute to the success of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and would have a negative effect. Lavrov also claimed that the United States and NATO were directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, not only through weapons deliveries but also through training personnel in the territories of the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and other countries.
