25.10.2024 12:25Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denied United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres a visit to Ukraine due to Guterres’s attendance at the BRICS summit in Russia.
This was reported by “AFP”, citing a source within the Office of the President of Ukraine.
In a statement yesterday evening, Zelensky condemned the Secretary-General, pointing out that October 24 is celebrated worldwide as United Nations Day, and on this very day, Guterres met with Vladimir Putin.
“Today, on United Nations Day, it is crucial that the world remembers the goals and principles of the UN Charter and the founding purpose of this organization. Even though some of its officials prefer the allure of Kazan over the essence of the UN Charter, our world is built in such a way that the rights of nations and norms of international law matter and will continue to matter,” Zelensky emphasized.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs previously expressed outrage over the UN Secretary-General’s visit to Russia, noting that Guterres did not attend the “Peace Summit” in Switzerland. The UN responded that Guterres considered the BRICS summit important because its member countries represent half of the world’s population.
Yesterday in Kazan, the Secretary-General called for peace in Ukraine and for reforms to the UN Security Council.
