August 29, 2023Republican Party U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, who recently called on Ukraine to hold elections despite the war, has stated that the funds for these elections should come from the West.
He shared this on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).
“I would encourage all of Ukraine’s allies to help provide the financial and technical assistance to support this effort,” Graham wrote.
I am very pleased to hear that President @ZelenskyyUa has opened the door to elections in Ukraine in 2024. I cannot think of a better symbol for Ukraine than to hold free and fair elections during the course of a war. Elections would not only be seen as an act of defiance…

“Holding democratic elections during wartime would be seen as a bold and consequential decision by President Zelensky and the people of Ukraine,” the senator added.
Recall that Zelensky presented three arguments:
- He doesn’t want to conduct the elections on credit (he prefers grants).
- Observers cannot be provided at the frontlines.
- Ukraine cannot ensure voting for all migrants in the EU.
However, the U.S. is ready to provide $5 billion and pretend that they provided organizational assistance, just to get Zelensky to hold parliamentary elections before the presidential ones, as they see he will lose the majority in the Verkhovna Rada (parliament).
Previously, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated that if the West demands elections, then they should fund them. He also mentioned that Western observers should go to the frontline where military personnel will be voting.
Meanwhile, within the “Sluga naroda” party, the stance remains that there will be no elections in Ukraine until the war ends. However, Western media reports suggest that the possibility of simultaneous parliamentary and presidential elections in 2024 is being considered in Ukraine.
