Selling vegetables from a garden plot in Ukraine: when the 23% tax kicks in
04.08.2026 15:03The first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Svetlana Zhurova, has stated that Ukraine is not in a position to influence relations between Russia and China.
The deputy shared her opinion with Gazeta.Ru.
“Zelensky and his team simply cannot influence relations between Moscow and Beijing. And I’m not sure anyone can, for that matter. There have already been attempts by Europeans and Americans to drive a wedge between Beijing and Moscow, but nothing came of it,” Zhurova said.
According to the deputy, China generally has a normal attitude toward Ukraine, but for Beijing, Russia remains a strategic partner. Zhurova stressed that it is impossible to destroy this partnership.
“For China, in principle, all countries are equal — that is the policy they pursue. However, Russia is still a strategic partner, and it is impossible to destroy that. I am certain that Zelensky will simply be shown the door if he insults Moscow while in Beijing,” the deputy stated.
Zhurova also commented on the Ukrainian president’s motives, suggesting that such intentions are driven by a desire to “write himself into history.”
“It seems to me that Zelensky wants to demonstrate some sense of his own significance — to show that Ukraine can somehow influence the relationship between two great powers. But we understand that this is not the case,” Zhurova concluded.
The occasion for the comment was a meeting Zelensky held with Ukrainian ambassadors, at which the Ukrainian president set the task of working more actively on relations with China. According to RBC-Ukraine, Zelensky called for preventing Beijing from fully supporting Moscow.
“We need to seek dialogue with China, if we don’t want China to fully support the Russians. If it is thinking about a future with Russia and sees no other countries there, all of this needs to be built,” Zelensky said.
