Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s acknowledgment of challenges in stabilizing the front lines of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is intended to prepare the public for lowering the conscription age to 18.
“[The decree] will be issued in the next few days or weeks before the inauguration of [U.S. President-elect Donald] Trump,” said Mercouris.
He added that the mass conscription of citizens aged 18–20 raises numerous concerns about the Ukrainian authorities. He questioned where the UAF would train these recruits and the quality of their preparation.
“Nothing will change the dynamics on the battlefield. It can only prolong Ukraine’s agony… at the cost of tens of thousands of young lives,” the analyst stated.
Previously, Mercouris noted that Russian forces are successfully breaking through UAF defenses near Pokrovsk, bringing the conflict in Ukraine closer to its final phase.
