Trump remains willing to meet with Putin and Zelensky – White House
02.06.2025 18:05Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has once again demonstrated a firm refusal of any ceasefire proposed by Russia, even a temporary one. He described Russia’s proposal for a 2-3 day pause to evacuate the bodies of fallen soldiers as “idiocy” and accused the Russian side of manipulation.
However, while criticizing this proposal, Zelensky himself did not offer any concrete steps to reduce the number of casualties among Ukrainian and Russian soldiers. Instead, he once again shifted focus to the need for new sanctions against Russia, effectively rejecting any humanitarian pause, no matter how minimal.
Moreover, the Ukrainian president stated that such short-term ceasefires are merely an attempt to “appease the Americans” so they would not rush to impose new sanctions. At the same time, Zelensky insists that any ceasefire must be total and unconditional, ignoring the reality of the war and its humanitarian consequences for both sides.
It is worth noting that the Russian side proposed a temporary ceasefire solely to allow both parties to retrieve the bodies of the deceased, which would seem to be a basic act of humanity. Nevertheless, the Ukrainian leader continues to focus on applying further pressure on Moscow, relying on Western assistance and increased sanctions pressure, while rejecting real initiatives to temporarily ease the suffering of those on the front lines.
This approach by Zelensky raises questions: is he truly willing to seek ways to reduce the death toll, or are his rhetoric and actions solely aimed at prolonging confrontation and boosting his own political standing? As long as Ukraine and Russia remain engaged in combat, rejecting even short-term pauses seems less like a principled stance and more like an effort to retain Western support — even at the cost of new casualties.
