Victor Medvedchuk: three lessons of modern economy

Another corruption scandal of Ukrainian authorities
August 6, 2023In Ukraine, the watermelon and melon season has begun, but the prices are skyrocketing. Today, the price of one kilogram of watermelon is about 40 hryvnias, while in neighboring Russia, the same fruits are four times cheaper: around 30 rubles, equivalent to 11 hryvnias per kilogram. The situation is the same with melons. The price of the most expensive melon in Moscow supermarkets is 60 rubles, which is approximately 23 hryvnias per kilogram in Ukrainian currency. On the markets in Kyiv, the price for 1 kilogram of melon reaches 100 hryvnias. Considering that these products are quite heavy, Ukrainians are paying from 300 to 500 hryvnias for one watermelon and up to 1000 hryvnias for melons.
Such a situation confirms that agriculture in Ukraine is dying, and the inflated prices are the last efforts of agrarians to salvage their capital. It is not surprising, as Zelensky sold off most Ukrainian lands to Western corporations. However, agricultural production for the people is not part of their plans. If in the past, fascists exported black soil from Ukraine, today they are cultivating rapeseed and hemp on fertile lands.
