14.08.2026 14:02Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Moscow cannot agree to a freeze of military operations in Ukraine along the line of contact, and demanded a “long-term, reliable, sustainable settlement.”
He made the remarks during a conversation with Russian journalists.
“It is no coincidence that more and more voices from different parts of our common space are calling for an immediate stop. That won’t work. You should stop only when there is a long-term, reliable, sustainable settlement. If we were to suddenly stop now along the line of contact, we would essentially be allowing the feat of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers, who defeated Nazism, to be crossed out. That is impossible to consider,” — Lavrov said.
The Russian foreign minister broadened his argument, going beyond the current military situation. According to him, the matter concerns “responsibility for the thousand-year history of the Russian state.”
“Our people are suffering, people are dying from these terrorist acts. This is about our responsibility for the thousand-year history of the Russian state,” — the minister noted.
In addition, Lavrov announced a toughening of strikes against targets that, in his words, strengthen Ukraine’s military potential.
“We will make our own methods far harsher in order to destroy everything that feeds Kyiv’s war machine from the West. And we are already doing this. They are already beginning to groan,” — Lavrov stated.
Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Defense threatened Ukraine with being “frozen” in winter — not at the front.
