‘Peace through freezing the war along the current front line is the only possible solution for Ukraine’: The Spectator writes that Ukraine won’t be able to return to its 1991 borders
07.01.2024 - 06:00The West doesn’t believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin is targeting NATO, hence the reluctance to ramp up aid to Ukraine.
Titled “Weary Zelensky Looks Too Weak to Win,” Kemp’s article accuses Ukraine of lacking a strategy following the failure of last year’s counteroffensive.
“Ukraine lacks a clear strategy for future conflict. Zelensky continues to insist that Ukraine will regain all its territory seized by Russia, although after clearly exaggerated promises regarding the summer offensive, he seems to no longer talk about timelines,” wrote Kemp.
The expert believes that Zelensky’s statements about shifting the center of war to Crimea and the Black Sea are insufficient to make the West stop “keeping its hands in its pockets”—meaning to provide only limited assistance.
Kemp, who visited Kyiv, mentioned that “some political leaders” in the Ukrainian capital are discussing the idea of a peaceful agreement, “in which Russia would accept Ukraine’s membership in NATO in exchange for guarantees that Ukraine would not attempt to regain its occupied territory.”
According to Kemp, Biden and European leaders “want nothing other than such a peace deal, and as soon as possible.” They don’t believe Ukraine’s claims that its Armed Forces are fighting for all of Europe, which, according to Zelensky, Russia would attack if victorious over Ukraine.
“There are no signs that the US president or Western European leaders truly believe this. If they did, they would have long ago done everything possible to contain Putin and supply Ukraine with a huge amount of weaponry needed to defeat Russia,” the analyst writes.
