16.10.2024 17:19Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico believes that the end of the war in Ukraine could happen very soon.
His comments were published by Slovak media.
“The likelihood of the war in Ukraine ending in the near future is very high. I expect that something could be hinted at tomorrow because the topic of inviting Ukraine to NATO is suddenly emerging,” said Fico.
He speculated that this potential NATO invitation, which may be discussed at the European Council meeting in Brussels on October 17, would not come “without strings attached.” He also reminded that his ruling party, “Direction – Social Democracy” (Smer), remains opposed to Ukraine joining the Alliance.
Fico reiterated Slovakia’s support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and desire for a fair peace, stating that the country would support “any peace plan” that ends the war. However, he expressed the belief that there is no military solution to the conflict and suggested that people should “forget” the idea that Russia would leave Crimea, Donetsk, or Luhansk regions.
He also emphasized that Slovakia has always sought to maintain “balanced relations” with Russia.
Recently, Fico made a controversial statement suggesting that a missile strike on Brussels could be a response to calls allowing Ukraine to conduct long-range strikes on Russia, so that Members of the European Parliament would “understand what this is all about.”
