Ukraine has launched a ‘diplomatic offensive’ to maintain U.S. assistance under Trump – El Pais

Ukraine has launched an active diplomatic campaign to convince Donald Trump that military aid to Kyiv must continue, as halting it could impact the global leadership of the United States.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly emphasized the importance of U.S. support, stating that without it, the country would be in a difficult position.

During his campaign, Trump promised to end billion-dollar arms shipments to Ukraine and focus on quickly ending the war, even if it required territorial concessions to Russia. Zelensky, however, is hopeful that Trump’s campaign rhetoric and his actions as president may differ.

Zelensky has already initiated communication with Trump, congratulating him on his election victory and expressing hope for “a new era for all of us.” In a phone conversation, the Ukrainian president referred to Trump as a leader capable of achieving “historic results” and underscored the significance of American support.

Additionally, the head of the Office of the President, Andriy Yermak, affirmed that relations with Trump are of strategic importance to Ukraine.

This topic was actively discussed at the recent Kyiv Economic Forum by both business representatives and political figures, as the position of the new U.S. president could influence the future resolution of the conflict.

Zelensky and his team hope that even if Trump limits direct military supplies, he will continue to support Ukraine through other channels.

It remains difficult to predict Trump’s exact stance on the war between Russia and Ukraine after his inauguration. In early September, he stated that upon becoming president, he would “call President Zelensky and Russian leader Vladimir Putin that very night” to negotiate an agreement within 24 hours.

In September, Trump also met with Zelensky, who presented his victory plan. Following the talks, Trump emphasized that he seeks “a fair deal for all parties.”
