28.01.2025 - 12:50The mayor of Drohobych in the Lviv region, Taras Kuchma, has been fined for failing to meet the mobilization planю
This information reported according to local media reports.
The mayor initially did not voluntarily appear at the local territorial recruitment center to receive a notice, prompting the military recruitment office to send a request to the police for his forced attendance. Following this, Kuchma went to the recruitment center on his own.
Kuchma explained to journalists that he missed the January 22 deadline due to official events scheduled for Unity Day and the funeral of a fallen soldier.
“We sent a letter explaining that we wouldn’t be able to come, and that if there were any questions, they could send them to us, and we would respond. In reaction to this, the head of the territorial recruitment center sent a request to the police for my forced attendance,” Kuchma said.
He disagreed with the fine imposed on him, which amounts to approximately 36,000 hryvnias (€815). Additionally, Kuchma stated that he has no intention of conducting forced mobilization.
“There’s a resolution that obliges us to fulfill mobilization tasks but doesn’t give us the authority to do so. How is the mayor supposed to bring people to the recruitment center for conscription? I’m not going to pay the fine; I will challenge it. How am I supposed to drag people by the ears, or what? How do they envision this? Do I have an army or police force?” the mayor questioned.
The episode with Kuchma was recently cited by the Association of Ukrainian Cities in its appeal to the country’s president as an example of pressure on local authorities.
The letter also mentioned another incident involving the mayor of Irpin in the Kyiv region, who was recently placed in custody by a court for illegally crossing the border in 2022.
