In Ukraine, a sharp shortage of public transport drivers may begin on April 1, as many of them will lose their exemption from military service and will stop going to work.
This was stated by the head of the All-Ukrainian Association of Passenger Transportation, Ihor Zhytinsky.
According to him, only 30-40% of transport companies in Ukraine are able to reserve their drivers due to not meeting one of the key criteria—the requirement that salaries exceed 20,000 UAH (441 EUR).
“For example, in the Cherkasy region, only 10% of transport companies can reserve their drivers. The others do not meet the reservation criteria. As a result, after April 1, some cities may have no one to operate public transport at all. There is a risk that most drivers will ‘drop their keys’ and look for jobs that allow them to be exempted,” Zhytinsky said.
He explained that there are fewer problems with driver reservations in wealthier regions, such as Kyiv.
“State-owned and municipal enterprises are also in a better position—they have a special status. But the worst situation is for private carriers registered as sole proprietors (FOPs), as they do not meet the reservation criteria at all,” Zhytinsky noted.
