18.06.2025 - 20:25For the third consecutive year, Kyiv has been ranked among the ten worst cities in the world to live in, according to The Economist.
One of the main reasons cited is the ongoing full-scale war, which continues to negatively affect safety, infrastructure, and access to basic services.
The magazine’s survey covers 173 cities and evaluates them across five key criteria: healthcare, culture and environment, education, infrastructure, and stability. While most areas have shown slight improvement or remained stable, the overall score dropped due to declining safety and political stability.
Vienna, which had topped the ranking as the world’s most livable city for the past three years, lost its first-place spot this year. The change was driven by two foiled terrorist attacks—one at a Taylor Swift concert and another at a train station—causing a dip in the city’s stability score, which factors in the risk of war, unrest, and terrorism.
Vienna now shares second place with Zurich. The top spot is currently held by Copenhagen, which received the highest rating for stability. The top five also include Melbourne and Geneva.
Smaller cities typically perform best in the rankings. Only three cities with populations over six million made it into the top 20. London and New York, which face high crime rates, terror threats, and traffic congestion, ranked only 54th and 69th, respectively. The world’s largest city, Tokyo, ranked 13th.
Last year, Kyiv was also ranked 165th in The Economist’s list of most livable cities.
