Fire at Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra: sacred objects evacuated, no casualties

The administration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra national nature reserve reported that no one was injured in the fire at the Dormition Cathedral and that sacred objects and icons had been evacuated.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko had earlier reported overnight that the roof of the Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra had caught fire. More detailed information about the damage and consequences of the fire will be provided later, the reserve’s administration said.

On the same night, a number of other fires broke out in Kyiv. A dormitory caught fire in the Pechersk district. In the Podil district, fires occurred in a private residential building and in a three-story building. In the Desnyansky district, fire engulfed the grounds of a kindergarten. Klitschko also reported fires in the Holosiivsky and Obolon districts.

Ukraine’s Minister of Culture Tetiana Berezhna reported a fire on the grounds of the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio in Kyiv. A costume workshop was damaged, and the largest and oldest costume collection in Ukraine was destroyed. Emergency services personnel are working at the scene.
