January 3, 2024The TV channel “1+1” received a complaint from the Commission on Journalistic Ethics regarding a segment on “Kvartal 95” that belittled the residents of Skadovsk, a town occupied by Russia.
In her complaint, journalist Yevgeniya Virlich from Kherson wrote that the said segment “contains direct and explicit discrimination against residents of southern and eastern Ukraine based on language and also discriminates against women.”
She requested the commission to publicly condemn the actions of the “1+1” channel and the “Kvartal 95” Studio.
The controversy stemmed from a scene involving a girl who moved from Skadovsk to Zakarpattia. In the storyline, she attempts to speak Ukrainian but makes mistakes and cannot remember the pronunciation of even elementary words.
