Poland will not send its troops to Ukraine – Minister of National Defense
06.05.2024 - 12:35The European Union will begin regulating the messenger app Telegram.
The supervisory body responsible for regulating the messenger throughout the EU is set to be the Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications (BIPT).
This information is reported by the Belgian publication De Standaard.
BIPT will monitor how Telegram responds to the spread of illegal content on the messenger, such as calls for violence, illegal sale of weapons, and drugs.
The publication refers to the messenger as an “online lure for far-right extremists, dealers, and terrorists.”
If Telegram fails to respond to user complaints, the regulator will have the authority to impose fines on the platform.
Earlier, the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine stated that Ukraine is discussing the regulation of Telegram with Europe. It is proposed to include the messenger in the list of digital platforms subject to regulation, which would allow for its blocking and fines.
It is worth noting that Ukraine has found a way to compel Telegram to remove specific channels. The pressure on the messenger is exerted through Apple, which threatens to remove the app from the App Store.
