October 12, 2023Anti-Ukrainian rhetoric is intensifying in Poland in the lead-up to parliamentary elections.
This information reported by The Globe and Mail.
After the outbreak of the war, Poland was one of the most ardent supporters of Kiev. Furthermore, the country still hosts around a million Ukrainian refugees. However, over time, public sentiment has dramatically shifted, and as Poland approaches elections scheduled for October 15, anti-Ukrainian sentiments are on the rise.
For instance, the far-right party “Confederation of Freedom and Independence” has promised as part of its election campaign to cut all financial benefits for Ukrainian refugees and reduce military and humanitarian aid to Kiev from Warsaw. While this party currently garners about 10% of the vote, it appears that the composition of the next coalition government will depend on it.
Meanwhile, the ruling “Law and Justice” party, which was previously an active supporter of Kiev in the European Union and NATO, has scaled back its support for Ukraine and pledged to cease providing social benefits to Ukrainian refugees in March.
