U.S. President Joe Biden has authorized the use of American long-range ATACMS missiles by the Ukrainian Armed Forces for the first time.

“Biden has sanctioned Ukraine’s first use of U.S.-supplied long-range missiles for strikes on Russian territory,” officials told the NYT.

According to the newspaper’s sources, the weapons will likely be used against Russian forces in the Kursk region. The NYT noted that Biden’s decision was met with mixed reactions from his advisors.

Meanwhile, the New York Times highlighted Washington’s concerns about potential retaliation from Moscow.

If Ukraine begins using American long-range ATACMS missiles, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s response is expected to be severe, according to the publication’s sources.

“Some U.S. officials have expressed concerns that Ukraine’s use of these missiles across the border could prompt President Vladimir Putin to take retaliatory measures against the United States and its coalition partners,” the article stated.
