Canada has lifted sanctions on Ukrainian lawyer Andriy Portnov

Canada has lifted sanctions on well-known Ukrainian lawyer Andriy Portnov.

Andriy Portnov had been under Canadian sanctions since 2014.

Since 2014, Portnov actively challenged the sanctions in court. He repeatedly emphasized that they were imposed without proper legal grounds and violated his rights. After a decade-long legal battle, including proceedings in both Canada and Ukraine, Portnov succeeded in having the sanctions lifted.

Earlier, Portnov had already won a legal case in the European Union, where he secured compensation for the unlawful application of sanctions.

Recently, Andriy Portnov also won a lawsuit against the publication Hromadske, which had claimed his involvement in the annexation of Crimea.

Additionally, this year Portnov won lawsuits regarding accusations of “pro-Russian sentiment” against the publication Biznes.Cenzor, the TV channel Pryamyi, and the Ukrainian “Center for Combating Corruption.”

The Pechersky District Court found the publications to be false and damaging to Portnov’s business reputation.
