Zelensky stated that without Western support, Russia could capture Ukraine
January 17, 2024It has been described as an unexpected setback for Kyiv by a high-ranking American official. Despite Ukrainian leaders expressing a clear desire for engagement, with Ermak subtly suggesting the possibility of a meeting between Zelensky and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, the anticipated meeting did not materialize, delivering a blow to Kyiv, as reported by Politico.
Contrary to these claims, a Ukrainian representative refutes that Kyiv actively sought a meeting with China, as stated to the publication. Furthermore, China abstained from participating in talks involving nations from the “global South.”
These developments suggest that China is currently not inclined to advocate for a cessation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Instead, there is a perceived alignment with Russia’s position. Another prominent U.S. official noted that China declined any meetings following Russia’s call for a halt in diplomatic contacts with Ukraine. In the European Union, it has been communicated that there was an appeal to China to resume direct contacts with President Zelensky.
